Up for sale, a 1986 Squier by Fender '57-style Stratocaster model SST-30 in exceptional condition and perfect working order, complete with an upgraded set of Fender USA Custom Shop Custom '54 single coil pickups. Built at the FujiGen Gakki factory in Japan, this guitar was one of Fender's earliest attempts at a quality, affordable Strat under the Squier brand name. Following in the footsteps of the venerable "JV" line that kicked off Fender Japan's vintage reissue run, this guitar easily exceeds the quality of later Squier iterations, featuring a one-piece maple neck and a solid basswood body.

Originally sold as the American '50s pickups and later rebranded as Custom '54s, these black bobbin pickups feature staggered, hand-beveled Alnico V magnets, and Formvar wire, delivering a broad array of traditional Strat tones. Each pickup has a distinctive, vital sound, with great percussive clarity and woody snap. The guitar weighs 7lbs 10oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.

The maple neck has a medium C profile carve with nicely rounded shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .840" deep at the 1st fret and .930" at the 12th. The maple fretboard has a 7 1/4" vintage-spec radius with dot inlay and stock slender fretwire that has good height and meat, showing only a hint of uniform wear on the crowns of frets 1-3, and virtually no wear further up the fretboard. The guitar plays well up the 25 1/2" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut is 1 5/8“ in width, and the headstock features the original chrome Fender Japan-branded Gotoh tuners that turn smoothly and hold pitch well. The "Made in Japan" text is present on the headstock face, with the E-prefix serial number above the four-bolt neck plate. The small "36" sticker is also intact, denoting a 36,000 yen price when sold new. The neck heel is pencil dated 10-14-86, and the SST-30 model stamp is also present.

All of the electronics function as intended, with the upgraded Fender Custom Shop Custom '54 single coils wired to the original trio of full-size pots that date to June of 1986. The chrome hardware has plenty of shine with light surface patina particularly on the saddles, and the original plastic parts are extremely clean. The Olympic White gloss finish shows only a hint of aging beyond the factory shade, and cosmetic wear is limited to light scuffs and marks mostly relegated to the perimeter of the body, with a stray finish chip on the body edge at the bass-side waist. There is also a very subtle sticker tan line on the bass-side body horn. The neck profile sports the original gloss finish with a few light marks mostly concentrated on the treble side of the profile between frets 7-9.

A Fender-branded gigbag is included.
