About This Listing

This 1966 Electric XII is a wonderfully kept piece of Fender history that sounds and plays just as good as it looks.

In the dynasty of the Fender roman numeral instruments, the XII reigns supreme. With a super versatile 4-way pickup selector, split coil pickups, shared genetics with the Fender offset family, and a head-turning hockey stick headstock, there's no denying that this is a weird and wonderful beast.

This guitar has been kept in the close care of a collector for the last 40+ years, and it shows. There are bumps and bruises (accurately pictured above) as it has been loved, but it is all original and there is no evidence of invasive repair. The finish has aged wonderfully, with some really nice light checking and that warm ambered quality that old nitro can take on.

The Fender Electric XII was designed in part to alleviate some of the playability problems of the 12 string electrics of the era, a big one being string spacing. The inclusion of a 1⅞” nut width makes a noticeable difference when compared to the Rickenbacker 1⅝” width of the era. This guitar was designed from the ground up to be a 12 string, it wasn’t a 6 string that had undergone a funky cut + copy + paste job.

Due to it’s fully intonatable bridge and it's great stability, plus it’s versatile palette of sounds, it became a studio and performance favorite. These guitars have been found in the hands of Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton, the Velvet Underground, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, and Tom Petty. A 1965 Fender Electric XII can also be heard throughout Led Zeppelin's 12 string juggernaut “Stairway to Heaven.”

This guitar is part of a collection that includes a matching 1966 Gibson ES-335 TD-12 in sunburst also listed on our Reverb shop, so if your very jangly band needs a matching set then look no further.

Feel free to shoot us a message with any questions, thanks!
