Vintage Fender and Fender 1970s F-Style Kluson Tuner Installation Guide

This is a combination of two different guides I formerly made. One side works for the Vintage tuners, the other side for the '70's F-Style tuners.

When installing six tuners in a row, it’s not easy to keep each tuner positioned accurately relative to the others. Without some kind of guide, one or two of them will likely be askew. There are other guides available, but none are quite as easy to use as this one. You simply clamp it down and drill the holes (detailed instructions are included). You don’t have to move the guide for each tuner. When you’re finished, each tuner will seat and be correctly lined up on the peghead.

With this guide, the provided dowel pins help hold everything firmly in place while you drill. All the pin holes will be accurately positioned and perpendicular. You don’t need a drill press. A hand drill, two or three clamps and you’re good to go. That’s it. It’s harder to describe the process than to do it. The tool…and its operation…has the virtue of simplicity. I machine each one of these guides myself on a small vertical mill from 1/2" thick 6018 Aluminum; no CNC, computers, automation, employees, etc.   All the holes are countersunk, which makes them easy to access. With aluminum there is little chance of damaging the bit as would be the case with steel. With reasonable care, the template should allow drilling many dozens of pegheads before showing significant wear.

*The non-critical dimensions can vary somewhat depending on the stock I can get. No such variations will affect the operation or effectiveness of the guide.
