Frank-Peter Dietrich “TOSCA”

Frank-Peter Dietrich is a German luthier, from a family that has been making guitars since 1904, and that had been building flutes and violins for generations. Besides building concert classical and flamenco guitars, he makes variety of historical instruments: lutes, and bench copies of baroque and romantic guitars. His instruments won a gold medal at exhibitions in Leipzig in 1986, and the Bavarian State Prize in 1991, and are played by a growing group of professional guitarists in Europe.

This guitar (you are looking at) was labelled as made in GDR which means it was made no later than 1990. Judging by its looks, materials and how its tuners lost their original luster I believe it was made much earlier than 1990. The model name TOSCA is printed on the back’s center brace above the label.

If you must know the precise date, you can find Frank’s website and ask him directly. You can also ask about current prices for his models.

Even though this TOSCA guitar is made with Spruce top and Maple back and sides, it doesn’t sound very bright. It offers superb note clarity and treble brilliance but also warmth and plenty of sweetness, deep but focused basses, all magnified by high volume, super response and impressive sustain. It represents German guitar making tradition very well.

This guitar survived in overall excellent condition. Few light buckle marks on its back and few light marks on its top, are the only cosmetic flaws, most visible only from very close distance. Guitar doesn’t have any structural problems. Most importantly its neck is straight, while fingerboard and frets remain in very good condition.
