About This Listing

Fender Stratocaster 1960

Made in USA

Serial Number 45222

A superb original sounding Stratocaster from 1960! Super vintage tones and looks..

This guitar was purchased 2nd hand in 1966 (although it was in Mint condition then, so perhaps not used or NOS) by a friend of the current owner at Roses in Brighton, East Sussex. Originally listed at the shop as a ’62 Strat (4 years old) it was soon found out to be a 1960 Stratocaster. The friend played the guitar throughout the Sixties and eventually sold it to his friend, many years later!

From research by the 2 previous owners the date of this guitar is thought to be Feb 1960. A few things relate to this date.. The Headstock having no Patent Number or Pending, Brazilian Slab board showing the Truss Rod nut inside of the board slightly, Clay dot markers in the board. The neck doesn’t have any written date on the end of the neck, it is documented that middle ’59 to early 1960 that they stopped the pencil written dates during that period as due to a complaint by a Fender customer as to an obscenity written on the neck butt. The frets have been changed, re-fretted some years ago, currently in good condition. The neck plate stamped serial number relates to guitars made from 1960 (40000-58000)

Inside the guitar the Pots are dated 48th Week of 1959, Stackpole Pots with the ‘304 code followed by yy/ww. The Pickups measure 6.1k, 5.49k and 6.28k Ohms giving an average of 5.95 which is consistent with Seymour Duncans findings over years of re-wiring these early 50’s Strats. “Seymour got this data from the thousands of Strat pickups he has fixed or rewound. He then averaged the data together by year, and came up with this table. Note the magnet polarity was changed in 1960 (even though Seymour thought it was 1958, other data suggests it’s more like 1959/1960).” Original second generation CRL 3 Way Switch with Pat Number, original Capacitor.

The original owner couldn’t afford a case at the time so purchase a cheap cardboard case that was stencilled with Fender, this is included in the sale as is the more modern Fender hard case. The guitar was played exclusively through a 1963 Vox AC30 that is also for Sale here, check out the Amp page.

With such a vintage instrument we will always try to hand deliver (within the UK) so please let us know where you are and we will do our best to bring the guitar to You. The guitar is available to view, test out here at the showroom, please email or call 01435 205335 to arrange.
