Here is a beautiful c.1920s “American Conservatory” branded guitar, which would have been made in Chicago by Lyon & Healy. Typically a lower end line than Washburn, this is an unusually fancy one that strongly defies that generalization.

I have labelled it is an “0-42” because it is 13.5” wide at the lower bout, and the appointments are quite close to that model made by Martin. The rosette, binding and abalone perfling is all reminiscent of a Martin in the 40-45 series. The beautiful Brazilian Rosewood is on par with a Martin of the same era.

Otherwise, this is all Chicago. A Strong V shaped neck, engraved pearl inlays, skinny pyramid bridge footprint, and slanted ladder bracing are all classic Lyon & Healy features. These guitars have a fantastic loud and dry tone for their size, and are great for fingerpicking due to the strong attack of the notes.

This guitar is a notable example not only because of the fanciness of the model, but also because it has escaped the 20th Century without any questionable repairs. It is untouched, and waiting for someone with skill and patience for the restoration. Once (and if) done right, this guitar will be an amazing piece that will look and sound like one of the best guitars that Chicago has to offer.
