With a carved top and back, 24 fret, five-piece neck through design, the chambered solid body Voodoo Custom is intended for those that play at high volume and require maximum sustain and accessibility. Built around the 25” scale for its creamy vocal qualities, this design makes for effortless playability and sonic discovery. Played by touring musicians worldwide, the Voodoo Custom has proven itself to be an incredibly rugged, reliable and versatile instrument.
The neck-through design of this guitar gives you the immediate reward of the Swamp Ash body resonating against your chest. The one-piece Redwood Burl top is a magnificent addition. The DiMarzio 191 in the neck position has a series/parallel switch that takes you from fat, traditional humbucker tones to more single-coil flair with more transparent midrange when you want a little more clarity than a neck position typically affords.
The location of the DiMarzio 192 bridge pickup is a little more forward from the bridge than on your average humbucker guitar, giving this position a richer midrange, stronger low end and a little less sizzle than your average bridge position. We find it sounds incredible and is a welcome departure from the plethora of guitars so steeped in tradition that they fail to experiment with this. The middle position gains a little extra “spank” due to the pickups being closer together as well.
5-pc neck, Cocobolo fretboard, stainless steel frets (with zero fret) and Grover 18:1 ratio tuners round out the amenities. The condition of the guitar is mint. Pots are clean and frets exhibit no wear. The included hard case has a couple light scuffs and one round area of sticker residue (not sticky, but visible). No tears, and all latches and hinges are 100%.
How Does It Play?
We have given this guitar a full setup with a fresh set of D’Addario EXL110 strings, and it is truly a joy to play. The string action measures 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and just a hair over 3/64” on the high E, free of any buzz. The neck profile is a nice D with perhaps a little more meat than some of its Gibson counterparts.
