Before this synth came to me, it was abused for years in a high school band room until it was given a 20 year rest in a basement storage (or possibly dumpster bin). She wasn’t pretty. Kinda looked like Vader’s burned up mask is episode 9.
i bought it on a whim since I used one in the casino gigs in the late 80’s and early 90’s. (Wish I was More) Sentimental.
Gotta admit, it cleaned up well and turns out it’s synth engine is 100%.
the keybed was badly beaten up and missing half the keys. But still, I’ve never gotten around to finishing this project.
What’s been done:

-full in and out cleaning

- battery port moved from inside the unit to a nice portable slot directly under the bottom panel.
- factory banks reinstalled, empty banks have new sounds taken from the DX11/TX81z and adapted to the additional fx and velocity features of the V50.
-keybed rebuilt but not complete. A few keys need to be reseated and sensor cleaned better.

The remaining work needed to be done is a zero dollar fix as the parts are already installed. You just need to finish the work I haven’t had time to go back in and finish.

I now have health issues and don’t see myself finishing this refurb, so I’m letting her go to someone who’s up to tinkering for an hour or so to get her running perfect again.

So what’s the V50?

The short answer: it’s 2 TX81z synths inside a box with an RX drum machine, QX sequencer, and effects.
The shorter answer: it was Yamaha’s very first workstation. It was superseded a few months later by the SY77. While the machine is surprisingly easy to maneuver and edit. Thinking of it as dual tx81z’s with effects makes it hands down the best sounding 4op FM synths yamaha ever released. Sound library is backward compatible with DX11,21,27,100,TX81z and every other 4op fm synth they made. That’s thousands of sounds available online for free.
If you hate the 80’s, pass on this. But if you’re a sound designer up for a retro challenge, here it is.
