About This Listing

Vintage (1960s) Klira SM-8 guitar. Klira made guitars in Germany in the 1960s and this was one of their Fender-style models. The guitar is in PLAYERS condition and definitely not in collector's condition. Maybe more like a Sonic Youth condition? The neck, body, pickguard, pickups, neckplate, electronics are original. The bridge has been replaced with a Fender Mustang bridge and the tremolo arm is from a mustang. The tuners have been replaced and work well. The frets are in decent condition. The body has been refinished in antique white, but it's not a professional paintjob. It looks pretty good from a distance, reasonable up close, and not so great if you look very close. There doesn't appear to be a clear coat finish, just the white color, presumably from an aerosol can. The body has some dents and surface irregularities that can be seen through the paint when held to the light. From a reasonable distance the finish looks pretty good, and the white finish with the black pickguard does look cool.  There are two small cracks near where the neck joins the body.. please see pics. They seem to be surface cracks rather than very deep. The neck has numerous dings and dents on the back and on the headstock.. please see pics. The truss rod cover is missing.
The guitar plays pretty well, I couldn't detect any bad frets or buzzy frets, except for the low E string above the 16th fret gets a little dead/buzzy. There is some slight rattling/ringing from the strings inbetween the bridge and the tremolo, same as on any jazzmaster style guitar. Action is reasonable. Not super low, but not too high or uncomfortable either. A couple of the inlays on the fretboard seem to be sunken in.. this doesn't affect playing really. The guitar holds tuning pretty well unless you get really crazy with the tremolo arm.. about the same as any jazzmaster I've played. The pickups sound good, quite unique, not as bright as a jazzmaster, maybe a bit more P90 style? The volume and tone pot are a little scratchy while being adjusted, but fine once left in position. Each pickup has 3 screws to adjust the pickup height - one on the bass side and two on the treble side. All 3 are there on the bridge pickup. On the neck pickup, one of the treble side screws are missing. It doesn't seem to make much difference, it's still possible to change the pickup height. Overall, definitely a player's guitar, but a very cool looking and sounding one. Please check pics carefully and be aware that the body finish is not a professional one. As it's a vintage guitar it will be sold as-is with no returns. The shipping price includes full insurance. If the shipping cost turns out to be less than $90, I will refund the difference after shipping.
