MESA/Boogie Studio Preamp! In this compact, rack-ready package you’ll find all the basic tones that made Boogie famous – clean, warm, smooth rhythm sounds; a screaming, vicious Lead voice; and enough control to produce anything in between. The Preamp is simple and straightforward, yet sophisticated. Like all other Boogies, it’s based on a no compromise, all-tube circuit with traditional style tone controls and instant Lead/Rhythm footswitching. It includes a 5 band graphic EQ for tone customizing; reverb; a stereo effects loop that can accommodate either low-level or line-level effects; and two pairs of stereo outputs (including Recording Outputs with speaker-simulator circuitry, which will mate perfectly with either a mixing console or the front end input of most guitar amps).
Similar to Mesa MarkII/III/IV/V sounds possible- the preamp was originally designed from the Mesa Mark IIC+. 2 footswitchable channels, switchable EQ and Reverb, stereo FX loop, stereo outs with separate volume controls, stereo recording outs (for recording without power amp/cab).
Mesa specs:
a 2 channels shared EQ
5-point EQ
"fat" and "bright" switches
channel switching (footswitch)
reverb & EQ switching (footswitch)
effects loop
2 main outs
2 recording outs
All tube 4 12ax7
1 12aT7 for the reverb tank
1 volume which affects both channels
1 master volume which affects both channels
Internal dates, serial, and the metal switch in the back place it for one of the earliest units, dates on components are 1988 and pots are 1987 and 1988.
Aftermarket footswitch is included from Sweetfootpedals dot com, no cable included but it takes a regular guitar cable.
Here is a list of known services/repairs to this unit
-Shortened, White Cord
-New Fuse Holder, knobs, slider switches, and fuse holder (all direct from Mesa)
-Groove Tubes for the power slots (no idea what the life is/when replaced)
-Sylvania (Browning) NOS 12AT7 Tube for the reverb
Note about the reverb on these units - you didn't buy this rack unit for the reverb, It's subpar at best, please know that going in and "bad reverb" will not be valid reason for return. I went with the Sylvania 12AT7 because it gave you SOME reverb when maxed out. This is a new tank, and NOS tube tested at 100% life - the reverb just isn't great on these. This is my 4th one and the reverb has been barely an effect on all of them. OR you could put a 12AX7 in there, and hear it a lot more (it will also likely not sound right/clip) but take your chances with the long term effects of running a different tube than it was made for.
Also the springs to hold the reverb tank aren't great either. I will include 8 small zip ties for if/when the springs break, you can secure the tank better in there with the zip ties. They seem to be holding fine but I have had them come off in transit before.
Will ship with Rack Ears + their screws removed and secured in a box or bag with the footswitch.
