Hello and welcome to The House of chrome.
You are looking at a rare and highly collectible Shure Brothers 701A crystal model microphone made during the 1930's that will make a great harp mic once a newer working element is installed. This unique microphone was basically developed by Shure but the actual crystal element sold under license by The Brush Company who had been making excellent crystal mics for several years. This was an affordable "entry level" mic for that time and mics were not cheap back then.
Pic # 2 shows this very mic in an old catalog along with a couple other Shure models.
This is honestly one of the rougher looking 701A mics I have seen but they don't come around very often. As you can see in the pics provided the mic is complete with the exception of the original crystal element. It came to me missing that component but I did take the time to clean the mic and rewire it properly so all you need to do is either display the mic on any stand you have or...install a new crystal o2 controlled magnetic element which will fit right inside the housing where the old element used to be.
There is appx 1 7/8 inches across X 1 inches deep of space to work with inside the housing for any new element and it can be secured with two clamps as seen in pic # 8.
There is a positive wire with white nylon and a negative / ground wire to work with. Simply solder the two wires in place on a new element and she'll work nicely for you. Cable is secured and ground via a small cable clamp at the bottom of the mic inside.
The 701A never changed it's design and had a conservative masculine look compared to many other mics of that era but in the 1930's this squared design was actually considered to be very modern and sleek.
The all metal body with polished chrome accents is quite lite weight despite being 4 1/2 inches tall.
The Mic shows typical wear for an item of this age. The front and rear screens are free of any dents and the paint looks pretty good. It still has the inner black silk screens and the metal grills are free of any dents or tarnish which is a huge bonus. The original Shure badge is still on the rear of the mic and looks very good with lite wear. They would often fall off but this one still has it. The polished nickel or chromed accents on the mic look rough and have a lot of cosmetic wear as seen in the detailed pics provided.
I would give the cosmetic rating of this mic a conservative 6 on a scale of 1 - 10.
It should be noted that the mic comes a 10 inch cable that runs out the back side of the mic through the top of the stand mount. It comes with an old female 1/4 inch connector. Cable is soft, pliable and free of damage. Simply attach a male mono 1/4 inch cable to operate and you're good to go.
MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS NOT PART OF THIS SALE...USED FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY.
The mic will screw onto any desk or floor stand you currently have.
This will make a nice display piece anywhere in the home, studio or office.
As with all my vintage microphones...
