About This Listing

Up for sale, a 1982 Gibson "The Ripper" L9-S bass in excellent condition and in perfect working order. One of the more unique and versatile Gibson basses ever produced, the Ripper comes equipped with its original pair of Bill Lawrence designed "Super Humbucker" pickups and a four-way rotary switch for series, parallel, and out of phase pickup settings.

The all maple construction comprises a three-piece set neck with slab maple fingerboard and an upgraded heavy duty Hipshot drop-in bridge, ensuring a very immediate, authoritative sound with smooth treble articulation and low frequency punch. And while the bass does have a distinctive growl and grind accentuated by a set of roundwound 50-110 strings, rolling back the Tone knob to taste can yield a broad, meaty thump. The pickups have a rich tonal palette, delivering fundamental power and top end cut. Offering plenty of natural punch and sustain, the bass weighs 10lbs 14oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable action and spot-on intonation.

The three-piece maple neck has a medium C profile carve with round shoulders and notable heft as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .850" deep at the 1st fret and 1.005" at the 12th. The original wide/flat fretwire shows zero wear, ostensibly leveled and crowned in the guitar’s lifetime, playing cleanly up the 34" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 5/8" in width. On the headstock, the original tuning machines are intact and work as they should with uniform patina on Gibson-embossed gear housings and clover buttons. The "Ripper" truss rod cover is also present.

All of the electronics work as they should, with CTS pots that date back to the first weeks of 1979. The four-way rotary pickup selector switch works as follows:

1 in phase — series
2 bridge only — single
3 in phase — parallel
4 out of phase — series

The bridge has been upgraded to one produced by Hipshot specifically for vintage Gibson basses. This heavy duty bridge is a direct drop-in replacement, very robust in its construction, offering greater stability and richer low end response than the original, also working as a top-loader or as a string through. The plastic parts include the original three-ply pickguard, along with the original trio of black speed knobs, and the rear strap button has been replaced, while the original forward button is intact.

The Natural nitro lacquer gloss finish is 100% original with very little ambering, and cosmetic wear is limited to light buckle rash at the bass-side waist, a few additional scuffs and marks across the back, and light wear along the lower bout body edge, with vertical lacquer checking extending from this area. The three-piece maple neck exhibits light flame figuring on the outer thirds, and the smooth gloss nitro finish is retained along the profile with just a few minor shallow marks.

A padded gigbag is included.
