Karl Höfner, Bubenreuth, Germany
Year made: estimated 1960s.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition, defect free. Minor traces of prior use.
Fittings: high-grade ebony.
Strings: brand new Thomastik-Infeld Dominant.

Full-size violin made at Karl Höfner's workshop in Bubenreuth, Germany, most likely in the 1960s. While Karl Höfner labels from that period did not show the model number, my detailed review of the images from old Höfner catalogues leads me to think that this violin is either the KH312 or the KH165, which are shown as models with one-piece backs in several old catalogues - please see the image. (I note that the KH165 features two dots on the back of its scroll - which are absent on this violin. However, I cannot authenticate the model with enough confidence.)

The violin features breathtakingly beautiful tone woods and shows exquisite workmanship.  The one-piece back and neck are strongly flamed and the top is tightly grained. Finished with gold-brown varnish, artistically shaded.

The instrument is light, resonant, and responsive. It has a beautiful tone, rich and complex, with delicate overtones and strong resonance.

Despite its respectable age, the violin is defect-free structurally and is in excellent cosmetic condition. There are no cracks or repairs. There are some minor nicks and scratches from prior use but overall the instrument is in excellent shape.

According to Karl Höfner's descriptions for distributors, its senior models - such as this one - were "made throughout of beautifully flamed and thoroughly seasoned wood... We only use best tone-wood, choice Bavarian spruce and European maple. The seasoning of the wood over years is standard. All trim is select ebony... Each instrument is carved from a solid block of wood and adjusted for best tone. The scroll and neck are hand-carved... Each instrument is meticulously crafted and graduated to ensure optimum performance. All instruments are finished with spirit varnish and hand rubbed..."

Please inquire about accessories - I can offer a good selection at deeply subsidized prices.
