This unique instrument sounds as good as it looks. Recently examined and set up in June 2022 by Ross Double Bass in Denver CO. This is a cello shaped double Bass circa 1900 with high shoulders. It is unlabeled but assumed to be of Tyrolean manufacture by master luthier Jon Peterson in LA circa 2004. It is possibly what is known as a "church" bass made to accompany a trebly pump organ and primarily played in the lower positions.
The bass has a very well arched top and back with 41.5 inch string length and violin corners, and a highly flamed back. The top is made from very finely grained spruce top with somewhat less flamed ribs. It features quality double purfuling on the top and back.
The slender fast D neck meets the upper shoulder at E. The unique extra volute in the scroll suggests an Italianate copy ala Maggini. The headstock at the neck is unbroken and has plate mounted tuning machines consistent with circa 1900 manufacture. There is a small chip in one volute on the E string side of the scroll.
Presently set up with Obligato strings and a new bridge and endpin by Jeff Robinson of Flagstaff AZ in 2008 and tuned in 4ths. I can also include a set of "Bass in 5ths" Pirastro strings at cost if you want to tune it C-G-D-A cello style.
Due to the slim neck and high shoulders I used it for "Americana" and Bluegrass gigs/recordings and rarely for orchestral work. Beautiful tone and easy playability. Includes a Mooradian bass bag. Shipping TBD according to location. I prefer local pickup in Grand Junction or Denver Colorado or possibly LA CA. Shipping is always an option.
