It's a Martin 00-18 knockoff / competitor. The Cortez company was born in the 60s to create high-quality, affordable Martin-style imports. Jack Westheimer got them started and gave them their name. They got so good at their craft that they would eventually be absorbed by the heralded Matsumoku factory (from which so many notable guitars have come).

It's the knockoff that can compete. Spruce over mahogany. And it sounds so good, it seems to be solid woods. (Thanks to fellow Reverbers and Cortez owners for their input.) I expected a thin-sounding, laminate build.  This has a very nice, balanced sound strummed or plucked / fingerpicked.

Initially, these were thought of as cheap import guitars, but no one bothered telling the Japanese makers. The fit and finish are in line with what I’ve come to expect out of Japan. This is solid quality all around. Already a vintage instrument that will continue to perform for years. It beats the strings off of any entry level acoustic today. Spare yourself from a new, tinny-sounding budget model by (INSERT BRANDS I WILL REFRAIN FROM SHAMING HERE) and score some vintage gold for only a little bit of silver.

This guitar was not played much, judging by the lack of play wear. Plenty of fret life. C-shaped mahogany neck with a proper rosewood fretboard. Open-backed tuners. Truss rod adjustment at the top of neck and inlaid Cortez on the headstock. Height-adjustable saddle. (Cortez the Killer? Or Crooner? Cortez the Fingerpicker? Cortez Coulda Been a Martin? I could go on all day…) I wish I knew this guitar’s story, but I don’t. It is up to you to write it.

Beautiful woodgrain all around. In great condition, aside from some slight bellying below the bridge, causing the bridge to lift on the high side. However, it is stable and solid. Playability is not compromised. And there is plenty of saddle and the setup right now is great. Comes with the original chip board case also in good condition.
