About This Listing

Welcome to another fine guitar from The Old Europe! Please make sure to read the entire description below carefully, and look at all the pictures.

General introduction and background:

Klira SM8 Kentucky guitar. This guitar was amongst a series of models with which Klira wanted to get into the market of copying US designs, to battle the onslaught of Japanese copies pouring into Western markets in the early 1970s. Klira was one of the biggest manufacturers in Germany at the time; nowadays, the company is pretty much forgotten as it went our of business in the 1980s and never was revived. The guitars pretty much feature the same quality as entry-level Framus or Höfner-guitars of the same time.

Please watch the video!

Measurements, weight and other specs:

-     Scale: 618 mm

-     Nut: ~42 mm

-     Weight: 2,74 kg

-     Pickups: two airy singlecoils, controlled with master volume, master tone, and a 3 way toggle switch.

-    Body: solid light weight wood, likely basswood.

-     Neck: maple neck, black finished, with rosewood fingerboard. Slim and small vintage frets.

Condition:

-     Body: Good condition with a a couple of scratches and dings and dongs. -     Neck: straight neck, frets show little wear (8/10). The neck is adjustable with the trussrod.

-     Electronics: fully functional. Volume and Tone potis have been cleaned, a new toggle switch has been installed.

-     Hardware: fully functional. The bridge is non-moveable, so the intonation (which is about right) cannot be adjusted.

-     Originality: All original except for the toggle switch.

Sound and Playability:

-     Playability and string action: The guitar plays very easily with a string action of currently set to 1,8 mm - the bridge is not maxed out. There is a shim under the neck (they all need one). The guitar has the typical low pressure on the bridge of the Jaguar/Jazzmaster tremolo and bridge design, so doing wide and exalted bendings might cause the strings to pop out. When playing, I was careful and advise to adjust your playing style to this.

 - Intonation: the bridge cannot be moved to fine tune the guitar, but intonation is about right.

-     Sound: very warm and twangy, airy single coil sound from the pickups. The pickups have been serviced, but are old and quite microphonic, so louder volumes with lots of gain will likely yield feedback. Please watch the video

Repairs, Service:

-     Complete cleaning of body, parts and fretboard

-     Frets polished and fretboard oiled

-     Ready to be played (just tune it up)
