2012 Joseph Redman Nylon 12 String
A few years back I found myself in the enjoyable position of
frequently comping for an old accordionist friend. In my younger years I had often played a
steel-string acoustic 12-string for such events. My 62-year old hands; however, could no
longer deal with the tensions of a steel-string 12.
I knew Joseph had been building classical 10 string instruments
and I approached him with the idea for a nylon 12-string. He was in and took on the entire design &
construction task. The result is as
pictured.
Tuning mirrors a standard 12-string acoustic: 1, 2 & 3 are
double treble strings tuned unison. 4, 5 & 6 are each a treble and a bass string
pair tuned octave.
Particulars are as follows:
Scale length = 650mm
B&S = Padauk
Top = Lutz spruce
Bindings & back strip = Satinwood (Leopard wood)
Neck = Spanish Cedar
Fretboard = Cocobolo rosewood
Bridge = EI Rosewood
Tuners = Schertler singles
Guitar is currently at Joseph's shop--having just been polished and touched up. It will drop ship from his Abingdon, VA location.
