Scully 284-8 vintage Analog Studio 1" 8-track Tape Recorder 1968

This is an excellent example of the Scully 1-in 8-track machine. I purchased it from a jazz label who bought it new in 1968. I've been using it for vintage tapes ever since with great results. Among the projects are George Harrison, Jimi Hendrix, the Stooges, and the entirety of the 1969 Woodstock concert was remixed from this machine for the Anniversary 2 years ago: This includes The Who, Sly and the Family Stone, Creedence Clearwater, etc. I've just sent the heads in for a head report. They're all in good condition with at least one year of steady working time available before relapping, in the modern studio age this probably means two or three years with modern semi-digital studio. The heads have enough material to be relapped and start all over again at that point. The entire machine has gone through and been recapped, as well as dialed in for all mechanical functions this month.

It comes with the SyncMaster remote control unit on a long cable. There's one button cap missing as you can see in the photo. The exterior of the unit is in pretty good condition for its age, one of the nicest ones we've seen.

Because it is an old machine with vintage electronics, I do not want to ship it, it is in great working shape right now. Anyone in Los Angeles could come and see the machine, try it out. If you live out of the city please have someone you know in Los Angeles come check it out for you and take it away to deal with shipping. It is sold as-is.
