For sale is a hidden gem of a microphone:
The Sennheiser E 903 (Evolution Series) is no longer in production and extremely hard to find. It was marketed as a snare mic originally because of it's high SPL capacity and smooth off-axis rejection. I only had the opportunity to use the mic four or five times in studio & home recording sessions. I wanted to try something different than the traditional SM-57. I found the E-903 to have a significantly hotter output and lower noise. It has a fuller mid character, silkier top end and slightly more punch in the lows without a proximity-ish bloom. I should've used it more often! I hate to let it go because my gut feeling is that this mic is truly a vintage classic. It's a mystery too! Anyone out there with more info on this mic please contact me! Even though I'm selling, this mic is intriguing and I hope to find another one day! (Not even sure if it's cardioid, super-cardioid or hyper-cardioid)!
It is a descendant of the pricey Sennheiser E 965 (Cardioid Dynamic) which go for up to $700 (serious vintage gem). It's closest relative still in production is the E 945 which is a (Super Cardioid Dynamic) - retail $219 to $270.
Another great factor about this mic (like the other e series mics) is its outstanding build quality. It is heavy and solid! My research revealed that it originally shipped with a 10 Year Warranty! Crazy! I certainly wouldn't hesitate to use it for a live snare or guitar cab in addition to anything in the studio.
Searching online I found only ONE other E 903 for sale at $255. I bought this one new, unopened on eBay maybe 12 years ago. And regrettably, it stayed in it's pouch in my mic bag nearly all that time. I may actually have the brochure (with polar pattern & frequency response chart, etc.) that it came with and, if I find it, I'll include it along with the original pouch and clip. It will be professionally packed for shipping (even as it's so obviously built to be super durable that I can't see how it COULD be damaged)! Made in Germany.
