About This Listing

Up for sale, a 1963 Epiphone Casino E-230T in excellent condition and in perfect working order, 100% original save for a new hand-carved bone nut. A particularly rare and early single pickup variant of the Casino, this guitar features the shorter pre-1964 (more Gibson-esque) headstock shape, full 1 11/16" wide nut, nickel hardware, and first-year mini parallelogram inlays.

Highlighting both the clarity and note attack of maple and the smooth, airy quality of the fully hollow construction, this Casino has a sweet natural acoustic tone that translates well through the original centrally located P-90 pickup. This overwound single coil yields a glassy sparkle and dynamic, percussive cut with a rich, textured midrange character and plenty of bark when you dig in. The guitar is featherweight at 5lbs 7oz. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and strung with 10-46 strings, this Casino is dialed in for low action and spot-on intonation.

The one-piece Honduran mahogany neck has a slender, fast-feeling C carve with slight shoulders, measuring .795" deep at the 1st fret and .915" at the 12th. On the Brazilian rosewood fretboard, the original medium jumbo frets are intact, ostensibly leveled and crowned yet still retaining good meat and showing just a touch of wear beneath the B string on frets 1-3. There is also light wear into the rosewood, primarily on the treble side of the board in the 1st position and extending up the neck very faintly primarily between the D and G strings. The guitar plays easily up the straight neck with slinky action in every register, and the truss rod is responsive and optimally adjusted. The upgraded carved bone nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width, particularly notable as Epiphone would start slimming down the nut width across their line in later '63 (a change that didn't affect their Gibson counterparts until early '65). On the headstock, the original Kluson Deluxe single line tuners are extremely clean and function as intended.

The electronics are completely stock, with untouched solder joints and original pots and tone caps. The black pickup bobbin is particularly well preserved beneath the nickel cover, and the nickel hardware shows light surface patina. Hardware includes the original ABR-1 bridge with nylon saddles and correct foundry stamp on the underside, as well as the stock trapeze tailpiece. The original white pickguard is intact, retaining its "E" Epsilon foil sticker. Visible through the F hole, the original blue rectangular Epiphone label is present, with a serial that matches the number imprinted on the headstock.

Cosmetically, this guitar is quite stunning. The warm and saturated original Sunburst finish shows no touchup or overspray, and cosmetic wear is limited to light buckle rash, a few scuffs central to the lower bout, and some additional scattered faint nicks, mostly relegated to the back lower bout body edges. The neck profile nitro gloss is smooth and inviting to the palm, and the profile shows only a few small dings along its length.

A modern heavy duty SKB hardshell case is included.
