This is a piece of history: a rare Epiphone Electar Hawaiian lap steel, made in 1935, sporting a Rickenbacker-style horseshoe pickup. Epiphone abandoned the horseshoe design after Rickenbacker sued for patent infringement and never again made steels that sounded anywhere near as good as the original models.
This is the real deal and way back before almost any of us can recall. The overall cosmetic condition is superb given that it’s nearly 90 years old! As far as I can tell it’s the original black paint. Though unfortunately sometime throughout its long life the headstock badge came loose and got lost.
The pickup is as far as I can tell original to the guitar but there isn’t a lot that I can find on it on the web to really truly authenticate it, though the person I purchased it from was convinced it was. The electronics although have been completely changed as far as I can tell with brand new wires and pots.
The case is absolutely ridiculously old and no doubt that it’s the original case for this lap steel. It’s very beaten and torn but still holds up just fine and will store it beautifully. All around everything is in tiptop shape given it’s age with bits of patina done to the pickup guard.
