Dan Alexander Rack Mount Maihak (Telefunken) V72s RARE
The V72 monoblock tube amplifier is a coveted piece of vintage gear. Some have been rack mounted and repurposed as microphone preamps as was done with these units.

They have very early serial numbers, and the original company name "Maihak" on the front. Very Rare.

Made from vintage and new parts, Dan Alexander rack mounted this pair with variable input gain, and DI inputs. Phantom power is also always on on this unit, so don't plug ribbon mics, or anything else that would be damaged by phantom power into the mic inputs. Apparently you cant have switchable Phantom power on these because of some issue with the circuit and the transformer. That's over my head.

I gotta say, these units definitely feel old, for better and worse. The output is low, I always had to boost the gain with a compressor, and the headroom is low too. That might be a good thing for people looking for yummy vintage distortion.

I was able to record clean vocals with it, albeit with that "Abby Road" color. I think that's why people love these. But sitting nxt to modern gear, I cant help but wonder if some modification might not improve them.

I know they are worth a lot more than I am charging for them, but I am reluctant to sell them without the caveat that they are definitely very colored. They are not the big robust clean tube preamp. (If you want that, check out my MP1a for sale). They are vibey and a specialty unit to be sure. Not for general use in my opinion, but for specific special circumstances when you're looking for a very vintage sound. Maybe doing a Beatles or Motown vocal that oozes with color and mojo.

Even though they are working, I suspect these may need some love and care, and so I am pricing them to sell to someone who might know more about them than I do, and possibly want to augment them.

Alternatively, I may just not realize that this is how they are supposed to sound, and I'm being foolish. Either way, I only feel comfortable selling them with this clear description, and at these prices. They are definitely not clean audiophile preamps.

If you choose local pickup in New York City, there will be no shipping cost of course. Ships ground only to the 48 mainland USA states. No International shipping and no shipping to Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico or any other US Territories. No Shipping to P.O. Boxes.

I'm selling off a lot of cool gear from my studio, so please check my other listings!
