About This Listing

ACCEPTING OFFERS.  Up for sale is a 1928 National Square Neck Resonator Guitar.  This Style 1 National has the 3 digit serial #859 which puts it about early to mid 1928.  Guitar comes protected by the original M & K (Maulbetsch & Whittemore) "Bull's Head" hard case.  Also included are various accessories, including different height metal string nuts, a couple of slide bars, a vintage twine rope strap and various fingerpicks, one of which is National branded.

This guitar appears to be in all original condition and although it has seen quite a bit of playing time, it seems to have been well taken care of.  Has all the scratches, small dings and wear you would expect of a nearly 100 year old guitar.  The most notable issue is the prominent dent on the front bass side of the lower bout.  There is also a small unrepaired surface crack on the side of the headstock and what appears to be a repaired (?) crack through the top of the headstock slot at the 3rd string.  Not sure if this was repaired or just never went all the way through the wood.  I am pointing these issues out in the spirit of full disclosure, but the headstock overall is very stable and will not require any repairs to be played and enjoyed.  See last 3 pictures, I did the best I could to capture them.

No other issues that I can see.  The cones look to be in very good condition and the guitar sounds great.  The strings are old and should be replaced.  The string height at the nut is higher than at the body.  It is 5mm at the 12th fret and 6mm at the 1st fret.  This is not an issue with the neck angle, or an issue at all really.  The nut just needs to be shaved down 1mm to level it off.  I was going to do this, but then thought twice about messing with a guitar of this rarity and age.  I am sure this guitar could also be polished up to a nice bright shine, but again, I will leave that up to someone with more experience.

The case is also in decent condition.  All latches work and the lock latch works also, but there is no key, so it will have to remain unlocked.  Handle is in great shape.  Some loose tolex here and there, but overall good shape.

Overall, a very solid guitar, guaranteed to bring many more years of enjoyment!  These are getting harder and harder to find in decent, playable condition.
