About This Listing

1964 Kay Speed Demon

Absolutely marvelous 1964 Kay Speed Demon with single 'speed bump' pickup, Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and bridge, laminated spruce top, and laminated maple back and sides.

Many of these old Chicago-made budget guitars have not aged well and aren't great players, but when you find a good one, they can be great. This is one of the great ones!

During the time I've owned it, it has been serviced by two of the Boston area's top luthiers, Jon Mouradian and Steve Morrill, and it plays superbly up and down the neck, with a straight neck and very low action. (After Steve Morrill did some work on the neck a couple of years ago, he told me that he was surprised by how well it came out.)

This guitar is especially well suited for playing jazz and blues, and has a surprisingly bold voice when played acoustically, without amplification. As shown in the photos, there is some honest wear and tear, as one would expect on a 57-year-old guitar, but it is structurally sound. The neck is fulsome with a soft V profile that is very comfortable and fills the hand nicely. The electronics work as they should, and the chrome  'speed bump' pickup has distinctively warm, vintage character. The original brass frets have plenty of life left.

Included is a deluxe Taylor hardshell case that fits the guitar perfectly.
