About This Listing

This a vintage 1937 National Duolian which features a metal body with a beautiful painted faux "Piano" body finish, simulating walnut grain. This guitar is in remarkable shape for it age. The original painted finish has held up very well with just some minor chipping on a few edges. This guitar has the holes in the body for a pickguard but pickguards didn't come out on the Doulian until the 1938 model. I'm guessing that a prior owner added a pickguard at some point. This is a 1937 model base on the B series serial number stamped in the headstock.

This is a fine-playing well cared for guitar. About 5 years ago this went to the National Guitar Headquarters in San Luis Obispo, CA for a professional factory setup and a resonator "tune-up". There was some string buzzing on the 15th fret and the cone had a little rattle which were both corrected.  This comes with the original case which is showing it's age. It has some scrapes and a broken hinge.

The Duolian is considered one of the classic Blues guitars of all time, and remains unsurpassed for an "authentic" slide and fingerpicked tone. These were also popular with early country players, and in all cases offered exceptional sound value for the price. You can also nail the tone for some Dire Straits songs with this (such as Romeo and Juliet). Mark Knopfler has many National guitars that he has played with Dire Straits and The Notting Hillbillies. The guitar on the cover of Dire Straits "Brother In Arms" album is his 1937 14-fret National Style "O" Resonator.
Dire Straits has at least one song on every album using the 1937 National.
