Since their release in late 1999, the Linn 51 series speakers have earned a well deserved reputation for distinct, well separated sound that offers increasing levels of clarity and depth as one enhances their capabilities. This mismatched pair (non-consecutive serial numbers, different assembler names) remains stock as manufactured.
Each speaker features a 20mm ceramic dome tweeter, a 100mm carbon-loaded polypropylene mid-range driver and a 200mm doped-paper rear-facing bass driver, along with two tuned ports, one at the top facing backwards and one at the bottom facing forwards. Three separate speaker inputs allows for tri- and bi-amp setups, with a small plate provided so that all three speakers can be driven by one traditional amplifier connection, using the onboard crossover. Additionally, one can purchase Linn Activ cards (i.e., Espek or similar) to further enhance the sound. This requires additional power amplifiers and a Linn processor to direct the signal to each driver.
The six-inch mid-range driver in the speaker pictured at left (assembled by Robert Calder) has been replaced with an original SPKR 016/2. If you like, I can provide you with the broken speaker, which can be rebuilt with a new voice coil. The rest of the system and each driver was checked with a multimeter for continuity. Everything now functions as it should. They sound fairly glorious and are probably the best-sounding speakers I’ve ever had. And I have been driving them with a 130-watt Carver “The Receiver” MXR-103. Die-hard fans like to tri-amp these with a minimum 200 watts per speaker (yes...with six separate high-power amps). I can only imagine what they must sound like with the active cards and tons of wattage pulsing through them.
You will notice that one woofer grille is missing. A new one is on order, due to arrive April 23. I will update the photo and description once it is installed. And of course it will be installed before they are shipped to you.
There are some small scratches in the cherry veneers, almost all of which can be seen in the photos. I will try to further buff them out in the coming days. But even as they are, most folks will find them stunning. Every other comment in the various hi-fi forums seems to refer to how “wife-friendly” these are, since they are attractive and unobtrusive in even the most civilized living area. I’m not sure how “wife-friendly” spouses considered the original price of $2,795 per speaker.
Standing 38 inches high and weighing 48 pounds each, these will be costly to ship, in the neighborhood of $150 per speaker. That is factored into the price, as I will cover shipping. They will be sent in secure packaging and insured for full replacement cost.
