About This Listing

For sale is a customized Conn 8H trombone which I have used to great effect the last several years.

Bell section is an Elkhart Conn 8H bell. The bell has a few battle scars from a busy life of being gigged on, but everything has been repaired and this bell sings!

The bell section is convertible and also comes with a unique O.E. Thayer valve. The wrap and outside valve is silver plated and when polished really shines! I can polish before shipping upon request.

The slide is a more modern Conn 88H slide. I can’t confirm the year, but I suspect from the early 80s. The golden lacquer has worn a great deal, but the slide is true and sounds great. Having played many Elkhart 88Hs in my career, I feel this slide has a little more nimbleness to it and less finicky about mouthpiece choice.
The slide width is a bit narrow with the Thayer valve so I had an additional brace put on the horn by Josh Landress in order to move the slide further right without stretching the hand out. Those with larger faces may considering modifying the slide to a larger width.
The conversion work was done by Terry Pierce in NYC many decades ago and this horn was gig on professionally for a number of years before I bought it at J. Landress Brass. The sound was so wonderful I couldn’t put it down. I am selling to fund new artistic endeavors.

Provenance:
I’ve primarily used this horn as a “fake bass” to record low trombone parts. The Thayer valve is so open and requires much less maintenance than I expected. I’ve used this horn to perform on The Tonight Show with the band Muse on their song “Pressure”, playing a bass trombone part.
I’ve also used it for Elvis Perkins’ new album “Creation Myths”, The Roots feat. Bilal “It Ain’t Fair”, Michael Leonhart Orchestra “Orchestral Excerpts vol. 1”, Yola “Stand For Myself”. You can hear me perform a solo with it on “The Struggle” by The Bogie Band feat. Joe Russo on Spotify

Horn sold with a used Marcus Bonna leather case. No mouthpiece or trombone stand included.  Sold AS-IS. Local pickup in Nashville, TN or within a few hours driving distance is okay. US: Free shipping. International Shipping: see below.
