Well Ibanez collectors, its one of the grail guitars on the block. Its not for everyone but those who love them typically search for years to find one. It has been in my private collection for about 16 years with a minimal amount of play time. This is a 1991 Ibanez RBM2NT Voyager. (Reb Beach Model 2 NaTural). To clear something up, this one is serialed as a 91 but Ibanez was well known to have used the prior years serial numbers into the next year. My signature plate says 92 and this one came with the lo-pro edge which is standard for 92, so this probably actually got built and shipped in 92. I originally thought there were only 100 of these made, however have recently learned there might be about 300 of them out there. However only the first 100 or so were actually signed and numbered by Reb on the electronics cavity plate (this is #48). No matter which version of the story is correct they are uber rare and ones in this condition don't come up often. These have a gorgeous combination of woods.
First lets start with the top, which is a very thick Figured Hawaiian Koa. A lot of these out there have very different levels of figuring with some barely having any at all. This one has some sweet flaming going on, especially in the lower part of the body. Koa is such a beautiful wood with lots of chatoyance. As far as condition, there are some minor pick marks around the pickups in the usual places. Check all the Hi res pics for lots of detail.
The mahogany back rounds out the sound of that wonderful koa. The grain is more subtle yet very pretty. There are a couple of blemishes on the back. A couple inch long buckle scratch, a little tiny nick by the corner of the spring plate, and a little nick on the bottom edge. I have taken pics of all of these areas.
As most players know gold hardware is classy looking but has a tendency to wear quickly. The hardware on this one is no exception. The lo pro edge (considered by many to be the best trem on out there) is in good working order, but does have gold wear on the bass side of the trem along with a few of the saddles. Have no fear though, you can still abuse the whammy and have it stay in tune. There is also wear on the pickup ring.
Like many of the top players of the time used, these EMG's help transfer all that emotional energy in to serious sonic bliss. They function just as they should and there is all but the faintest logo wear on the singles. It also has a push pull knob to split the 89, and a mid boost switch.
One of the absolute standouts of this guitar is the neck. The solid Pau Ferro neck and fret board really bring this thing together. You are starting to see more exotic woods used for necks now, but it was very few and far between back when these came out and nearly non existent for major manufacturers. The dense tight grain of Pau Ferro (Bolivian Rosewood) helps with sustain as well as keeping the guitar in tune with less frequent truss rod adjustments. The back of the neck and fingerboard are in great shape and I don't notice any blemishes. That includes NO infamous locking nut cracks or neck pocket cracks!! The frets are still in great shape. The lower frets are starting the beginnings of some chording divots but nothing that would need immediate attention.
These guitars are oil finished so if you think your tone woods should breathe this is for you. Plus the neck is just so silky feeling with no poly to slow you down.
There are some fine buckle scratches on the plastic trim plates, and some pick and fingernail swirling on the gold pick guard. This one is missing the original Beehive knob.
All in all this is a very fine example of a very collectible guitar. There are some minor blemishes that make it non mint, but it definetly has not seen even moderate use. Most importantly it plays and sounds great, so whether you plan to tour with it or appreciate its art like collectibility you will be in Heaven. It will come with the trem bar and Ibanez prestige deluxe case.
