A very RARE Fender STM Stratocaster, appropriately nicknamed “The Red Tiger”
Made in Japan during 1984-1987 at the legendary Fuji-Gen factory
The STM models could be found in the “Pro-Feel” section of the Fender Japan catalog, and had semi-custom features to make them different from the standard MIJ production models.
For example the STM models feature Gotoh Tuners, a Medium Scale Length (the ideal situation for those far finger stretches when tapping) and a high fret access neck joint with micro tilt functionality (nowadays this is a normal feature, but back when this guitar hit the market it was pretty revolutionary)
This guitar was nicknamed “The Red Tiger” because of it’s 80’s appointments, during its life it has been modified with a tiger stripe finish that would typically be found on brands such as Kramer, Charvel, ESP and used by players such a Satchel from Steel Panther or George Lynch
the pickup/wiring has been changed to 2 humbuckers with 1 master volume and 3 way pickup selector (currently only the bridge pickup is wired into the circuit, making the 3 way toggle act like a kill switch)
Both humbuckers look like Dimarzio pickups, but don’t have any branding on them. Eitherway the Bridge pickup rips and has the classic Van Halen 1 and 2 sound.
The stratocaster pickguard was removed and the body/top was filled (with backside routed added), the Fender headstock decal was sanded off (the Made In Japan Serial Number is still present).
The bridge has been locked with 2 screws and currently acts as a hardtail bridge.
The neckside strap button has a different location than usual (but balances very good on a strap)
The backside has a vintage japanese cartoon sticker from 1989.
The guitar is definitely "player grade" and has a fair share of dings and scratches to prove it (as pictured)
but nowadays that's called "relic" and most brands charge extra €€ for that ... I don't ;)
the frets show use (as pictured) but it still plays great! There are NO problems with bending / playability
Currently strung with a set of Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottom 10-52
