About This Listing

The pre-war F-12 is said to be the rarest of all Gibson Artist Model Mandolins. This example from 1934 is in excellent overall condition complete with the original purchase receipt and case. Originally an export model ("Made in USA" stamp on headstock) it was purchased new in October 1935 from Rushworth & Dreaper Ltd in Liverpool with its original British made, plush lined hard shell case.

The F-12 made it's catalogue debut in 1934 as Gibson's highest spec Artist Model mandolin (priced at $175), surpassed only by the Master Model F-5 (priced at $250.) Features include a select Spruce top, figured Maple back and sides, Mahogany neck, raised scroll Rosewood fingerboard with ornate pearl inlays, gold hardware, finished in a 'Golden Sunburst' to the top and red stained Mahogany to the back and sides.

This particular example is in excellent condition having clearly been looked after throughout its life and stored in its case when not being played. The sunburst finish remains vibrant with little fading. It shows minor signs of wear and slight tarnishing to the gold plated hardware as you would expect. It appears all original besides an interesting, inset pearloid circle to the rear of the headstock possibly bearing the original owner's initials. In addition, a postcode has been written in UV pen to the rear of the headstock which is evident under blacklight, and most probably removable should the purchaser desire.

The F-12 in this guise was only made for 3 years being discontinued in 1937. The model was then completely redesigned and reintroduced in 1949. As such this represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a wonderful, rare piece of Gibson history as well as a beautifully crafted instrument from a fantastic period of Gibson manufacture.
