About This Listing

Hello and welcome to the House of Chrome.

If you are buying a Shure 51 on Ebay that is NOT promised to work or work well at are asking for trouble. About half the Shure 51's I've come across do not work or just barely. This one happens to be in very good working order with a very strong signal and the impedance switch on the bottom front of the mic works perfectly.

This Shure 51 comes with the original desk shown but will need a 3 pin cable in which to operate the mic.

You are looking at a the Shure Brothers 51 Dynamic microphone that was manufactured in Evanston, ILL sometime between 1956 and 1960 before the Shure Brothers plant was moved to Evanston. The Shure 51 originally came out in 1949. There is no cosmetic difference between the Chicago and Evanston mics with red screen however. Just the label stating where they were built. These mics have a little weight to them being almost 2 pounds. The 51 has clean, deco styling with elegant looks and was a favorite microphone used for several years by musical legend Nat King Cole and Ritchie Valens. This Shure 51 had the satin chrome finish with royal blue badge.

Pic # 2 is from an old Shure advertisement showing this model and it's basic characteristics.

The Shure 51 is an omni-directional mic that was used for singing, broadcasting and a whole other slew of uses.  This mic has a dirty "rockabilly" sound that many musicians like to replicate today. If that is the sound you are going for then you are going to like this mic.

The finish shows extremely lite wear as seen in the pictures provided. There are no engravings, pitting or dents but there are a couple scratches and scuff marks in the satin chrome finish. Still far average for these Shure 51 mics and worthy of any vintage mic collection. The ribs are straight with no fractures. The joint mechanism holds strong like it should as well and can be tightened as needed with a screw driver. The red silk screen is quite nice with very lite discoloration in one small spot at the top of the mic. Zero rip or holes however. Blue label looks very nice and completely legible. This mic is solid with zero loose parts inside. A very nice example of an older Shure Brothers 51 microphone.

The threading for the stand and cable is perfect.

The mic comes with a period Shure S-36 desk stand that makes for a very stable platform and compliments the mic nicely. This S-36 was built between 1939 and 1960 before being discontinued.

This stand has very lite wear as you can see. Just a few scuff marks and paint loss on the front Shure insignia. It still has it's metal insignia, 5 rubber pads and cable clamp as well as the brass bolt for attaching the microphone. The painted Shure insignia does show wear but usually these are completely worn away from years of use. Mic with stand is appx 8 inches tall X 5 inches wide X 7 inches deep.

The mic stand will compliment the microphone nicely.

Mic will screw onto any desk or floor stand you have if you don't like the desk stand.

If you need a vintage 3 pin screw on type cable for this mic just ask and I'll send you a good link so that you may order one. I don't currently have any 3 pin cables for sale.

As with all my vintage microphones...

I can promise you will be happy with it for the price paid. If not...I have a no hassle return policy. The shipping will be on you as I believe that's fair but the purchase price would be refunded. Domestic buyer will get priority shipping.
