This one is a stunner! Beautiful 1960’s nylon string from the Workshop of Jose Agustin in Mexico City! Beautiful instrument with gorgeous attention to detail.
As an instrument, this guitar kicks out beautiful tone across the room. Deep, rich, and soulful bass comes booming out of it. Solid spruce top, gorgeous rosewood bridge, bone nut and saddle, mahogany neck, and what looks to be stunning quarter-sawn maple for the back and sides! The back and sides being maple are a bit unusual for this guitar. Generally the back and sides of the guitars from this era Mexico are made of Palo Escrito, the maple gives this guitar a nice unique touch. Guitar stays in tune beautifully and feels wonderful to play, it has some old soul but is still delivering as a quality instrument.
That rosette is gorgeous! Each individual tile is meticulously laid by hand, that’s some serious talent to do that. The label on the inside reads “Ecuador - 6 - Mexico City D.F.” That’s not a reference to Ecuador the country, that’s how phone numbers in Mexico City were when they were just 3 numbers on a rotary phone. Ecuador 6 would have been “326.” What a different time, that’s so cool.
To me, This has all the hallmarks of a Paracho guitar. The build, the feel, the sound, the smell, the weight, everything about it tells me that this builder most likely studied in Paracho and then opened a guitar shop in Mexico City. Paracho is one of the best and most and most famous guitar making cities on earth, most luthiers in Mexico especially at this time did their training in Paracho and either stayed there or brought what they learned back to their home cities. To me, this feels like one of the really nice guitars from Paracho that I love.
The action is totally playable and feeling good, I brought the saddle down just about as far as it can go. There were a few bumps on the back of the neck from rubbing in the case that were filled and are not totally invisible, but your hand glides over them easily when you’re playing without any hinderance. Overall it’s a super healthy guitar with a ton of vibe, tone, playability, and soul.
Comes with the original case, love this guitar!
