About This Listing

This is a beautiful, vintage, component system from Technics by Panasonic from the late 1970s. It is amazing shape for a forty+ year old system. It comes with the original boxes, packing materials, and owner's manuals. These components can all be rack-mounted.

SE-9060 Amplifier: Every now and again, a spate of new electronic and technological developments results in some startling improvements in performance. The SE-9060 solid state DC power amplifier is a prime example. The THD of 0.02%, and the S/N ratio of 120dB are direct results of Technics' insistence upon the uncompromising standards required for ultra-clean pure sound reproduction. It almost seems that Technics has succeeded in achieving that elusive ideal of an amplifier being no more than a straight piece of wire endowed with gain properties. In order to amplify the signals from the preamplifier to levels sufficient enough to drive the speakers without the slightest trace of change, not only the total harmonic distortion, but also the amplifier's open-loop distortion and transient distortion have all been reduced to unprecedented levels. The astronomical S/N ratio is also indicative of the unqualified success in reproducing clean, pure sound. In fact, the distortion and noise levels proved very difficult to detect and record with even advanced types of measuring equipment. Some of the more important features in the SE-9060 include DC gain, and almost negligible phase shift in the low frequency region, made possible by the adoption of DC amplification stages. The safety drive protection circuits provide full protection of both speakers and amplifier unit against inadvertent speaker terminal short-circuits. Simple stereo/mono switching is also provided for use of the SE-9060 as a mono amplifier (180 watts of power) in multi-amplifier set-ups etc. Furthermore, the low, flat styling (height reduced to half that of conventional amplifiers) enhances the versatility of the SE-9060 space-wise. Power output: 70 watts per channel into 8Ω (stereo), 180 watts into 8Ω (mono).

SU-9070 Preamplifier: Ahead of its time. The flat nature gets out of the way of the recordings. To be fair, in some cases it shows weaknesses in your gear or recordings. THREE Phono Inputs, 2 MM, 1 MC. I have used both high and low output MC on the MC pre with no issues. THREE tape inputs and recording inputs too. Finally, a loop for an external unit like an EQ that doesn't take up a tape loop. I wish someone would remake something like this. Easy to re-cap and keep running well into the future with removable top and bottom panels. Inputs all easily operated from the front panel with selector knobs that have a very positive engagement with a satisfying metal clunk. This is version A2, with the MC phono input.

ST-9030 FM Tuner: Staggering as the ST-9030 technical specifications may seem, the real test of true high quality performance lies in waveform fidelity. Although the waveform of all signals in music programs are usually extremely complex, there are two relatively simple forms - the square wave, and the tone burst signals that will clearly show how well the tuner performs. The comparison here between Technics ST-9030 (where design considerations were all aimed at waveform fidelity) and a conventional tuner (where waveform fidelity has not been of prime importance) clearly illustrates the logical conclusion resulting from a critical difference in approach to this means of testing quality and performance. The very steep sag in the square wave output signal in the conventional tuner indicates poor amplification phase characteristics in the low frequency region (thus introducing distortion), while the suppressed sections at the start of the 1kHz sine wave signals signify a contracted dynamic range in the low frequency region. The ST-9030 shows clear superiority over the conventional tuner. Although the time lag is not so critical if it is consistent, the unstable response patterns, the shortened leading edge amplitudes and the ringing during the off times will introduce audible distortion.

These are all in great condition, and I have the original boxes, packing materials, and owner's manuals. Burned out lights have been replaced with LEDs. I replaced the tuner backlights with blue LEDs, which give it a cool, more modern look. If you prefer the vintage look, I can put them back to soft-white LEDs, or the original incandescent bulbs.

These will ship in three separate boxes. If you are near eastern Massachusetts we can arrange to meet, following COVID guidelines, to save on shipping.
