Spendor LPZ (Linear Pressure Zone) tweeter

The goal of every tweeter designer is to achievelinear acoustic output over a wide frequency range. In practice this isextremely difficult. Spendor’s approach is radical, and it works. The SpendorLPZ tweeter is built around a stainless steel front plate which forms a dampedacoustic chamber in front of a lightweight woven polyamide diaphragm. The frontplate incorporates a phase correcting micro foil to equalise sound wave pathlengths across the diaphragm surface, simultaneously it generates a symmetricalpressure environment on both faces of the tweeter diaphragm so the tweeteroperates in a balanced linear mode. The front plate also provides excellentmechanical protection for the delicate tweeter dome and a smart modernappearance.

Imagine focusing an ultra high quality camera lensuntil you see a clear bright image. That’s the effect of Spendor LPZtechnology. Our sequential geometry micro-foil operates like an acoustic lens.The result is perfect focus, uninhibited sound transmission and a very widelistening window. Sound images are vivid, in-the-air, as bright or sweet as anymusic demands.

Spendor 5G Linear flow port

The Spendor 5G Linear flow port, inspired byFormula 1 diffuser technology, incorporates an aerodynamically profiled centralbaffle, like an aircraft wing, to create a tapered twin-venturi port. Air atthe port extremities is smoothly decelerated and there is a further reductionin air velocity in the large tapered area at the cabinet base. The result isevenly balanced air pressure and air-flow along the whole length of the portleading to very low distortion at all playing levels. Rapidly decreasing airvelocity at the port extremities creates an air-curtain effect to eliminateport noise and spurious mid-band radiation. A carefully optimised combinationof bass driver characteristics, enclosure volume, air flow and wide-band, verylow-Q, very low phase shift port tuning guarantees fast, coherent, life-likebass in a way no conventional loudspeaker can challenge.

The D7.2 and D9.2 are notably free from theunnatural, slow, leaden, low frequency sonic signature that stronglycharacterises the sound of most conventional loudspeakers.

High quality terminals are recessed within the portaperture to hide plug and cable connections for neat appearance.

Spendor 18cm drive units developed for D-Line

The D7.2 mid-bass and D9.2 mid-range drive unitshave an advanced EP77 polymer cone for superb clarity and vanishingly lowcolouration.

The low frequency drive units have ultra-rigid two-partbonded Kevlar composite cone assemblies for accurate powerful low frequencyresponse.

Both drivers feature cast magnesium alloy chassis,high efficiency motor systems, optimised electro-dynamic damping, and excellentthermal dissipation for wide dynamic range. New polymer surrounds with verystable molecular composition reduce driver break-in time significantly.

Timing is fundamental to the musical experience. Inconventional loudspeakers rigid high-density cabinet panels are mass-damped toreduce cabinet-talk. Spurious energy is stored and released slowly. Thisintroduces unnatural blurring and slowing of the sound.

Spendor’s solution is Dynamic Damping with smalllow mass constrained polymer dampers at key energy interface points toinstantly convert any spurious energy in the cabinet structure into inaudibleheat. Asymmetric aperture bracing creates a rigid cabinet structure andeliminates internal standing waves. The result is a silent rigid cabinet and anaturally fast engaging sound.

Unconstrained internal airflow

Conventional loudspeakers incorporate foam or fibrefilling to provide low frequency acoustic damping. The damping material storessound energy. As the stored energy is released it is no longer in-time with themusic and as it is released it creates an unnaturally, heavy, slow sound.

Inside the D7.2 and D9.2 there is no low frequencydamping, the sound path from the bass drivers to the listening room isunrestricted. As a result the Spendor D7.2 and D9.2 are entirely free fromdamping material energy storage effects, the advantage is clearly audible.Music sounds naturally fast, agile and coherent.

Stabiliser inserts

The base of the cabinet has four levelling feetattached via forged steel inserts to hold the cabinet rock steady.

The elimination of micro-vibration allows finemusical detail to be reproduced with delicate precision.

Crossover network

A meticulously refined crossover network withprecision wound inductors and high-linearity plastic film capacitors integratesthe drivers seamlessly in a minimum phase alignment.

Each crossover component and every complete pair ofSpendor loudspeakers is calibrated and matched to stringent broadcast referencestandards.

High efficiency

90dB efficiency and an easy to drive 8ohm loadensure complete compatibility with a wide range of amplifiers and cables. Withsubstantial power handling D-Line can play very loud without soundingcompressed. At low replay levels the sound is always clear and transparent.
