About This Listing

For sale is a beautiful 1993 Paul Reed Smith Custom 24 customized to PRS Santana specifications in very good condition (includes PRS case).

Customization includes (as done by myself):

(1)       Jim Wagner “GodWood” humbucker in the bridge postion

Note: pickups are full humbuckers with Gold covers (non-single coil splitable)

-     Rosewood truss rod cover

-     3-position switch installed in place of the rotary switch

-     Full set of Gold locking tuners (tuners fit into the original headstock holes (no new holes were drilled to support the replacement tuners)

Note: (original PRS tuners are included with the guitar)

Why did I customize the guitar?

-     I did not like, or get used-to the rotary selector switch for the original split-coil Dragon pickups. Just couldn’t get used to it…

-     I did not care for the sound of the original Dragon pickups. I felt they were a little too shrill for my tastes.

-     I changed-out the original locking PRS tuners because I felt they were too difficult to lock-down on the strings (especially if I broke a string and needed to change a string quickly. I did not care for this early design which PRS eventually changed.

-     I liked the Santana guitar, but could not afford one at the time I purchased this one back in 2012. I did buy the SE Santana model previously, but sold it a few months later (it was a decent guitar for the money). Then I bought this Paul Reed Smith Custom 24, what an upgrade that was!

Added note: I had a fret job done on the guitar last year; the frets are in great shape. The volume and tone pots have been replaced; they are in very good condition as well (no static when you turn them). There are only very light scratches; no major dents or dings. The scratches are so light on the back of the guitar, the pictures don’t show them. Weighs in at 8.lbs even. The guitar is in really good shape for being 28 years old!

What makes this guitar so special?

It plays beautifully, looks great (especially with the Gold pickup covers), is rated at a “10” flame top, it sounds awesome, and has been a pleasure to play and own for the last 9 years!

When I first looked for a Custom 24; I wanted an older one (I love old vintage guitars). The early Custom 24s have a smaller neck heel which give you full access to the fretboard. PRS changed their guitars to a larger neck heel in 1995. Replacing the Dragon pickups with the Jim Wagner’s JWP (formerly branded as WCR Pickups) DarkBurst and GodWood pickups brought the guitar alive. What tone!

To hear the same pickups in a PRS Custom 22, search on the internet for:

"WCR Pickup Demo"   Look for the video of the gentleman with the PRS Custom 22

So why sell the Custom 24 then?

I finally bought a used Paul Reed Smith Santana Anniversary model guitar (always wanted one). She’s pretty nice; and now I have to sell the Custom 24 to help offset the cost of the Santana guitar. I have A/B ‘ed them both side by side. I can’t say the Santana sounds better than this Paul Reed Smith Custom 24, the Santana guitar has a different voice (a little brighter). Perhaps I will change the pickups on the that guitar as well? Both guitars play wonderfully. So that’s my story.

If you are looking for a Custom 24 with split-coil pickups this may not be the guitar for you. However, if you want a near vintage Santana style “players guitar” with a lot of soul at a great price, this guitar is a very good option. Thanks for looking at my offering. I am shipping only within the continental USA.
