1972 Masaru Matano Clase 500, good condition.
Solid cedar soundboard, laminated rosewood back and sides (the dark black streaking in the grain of the back makes me wonder if it is Brazilian, which is possible for a Matano from this era, but it may be Indian rosewood), rosewood fingerboard and bridge, bone nut and saddle. Tuners are original. 656mm scale length.
This early Clase 500 was built at Matano's "Meiko Gakki" workshop, which was likely a smaller operation, with fewer luthiers working on instruments than that which came later once his labels changed in 1973 or '74.
This Matano shows some cosmetic wear and tear befitting its age (various minor dents, scratches, and scuffs---see images), but structurally it is in great condition, with no cracks or structural defects of any sort.
Frets are in good shape. Neck is straight.
The neck angle and setup are also good, with current action set at 4mm low E to 3mm high E, with 2-3 mm of saddle remaining above the bridge to lower action further as desired. Playability is very good, as is true for most all Matano classicals I have played.
Dry, crisp, balanced tone, with good volume, clarity, and sustain.
Will ship in a 70's era Japanese classical hard case that will be fully functional but may have some cosmetic defects.
Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.
