About This Listing

The Kay Galaxie has, in my opinion, got to be one of the prettiest pawn shop guitars out there. The body shape, colors, style, one pickup, and tailpiece are just so friggin cool. These were budget guitars when they first came out, but are now valued and renown for their surprising craftsmanship and unreplicable sonic character and personality. This one is from the 50s or 60s, is in fair cosmetic condition, and amazing playing condition.

I will outline everything I can about the condition, but please look closely at the detailed pictures to see everything for yourself as well.

Cosmetically it's got plenty of evidence of having been used heavily for years: there are scratches and finish marks everywhere, the top has darkened and cured, the binding has aged into a creamy yellow, and there is that classic vintage finish checking. There is also substantial finish wear/chipping on the butt end of the body, and a line down the side of the neck where the fretboard was re-glued and then sanded to make flush. Lastly, a small chip in the nut on the high E side. The string slot is uncompromised. Despite these cosmetic points, there are no cracks in the wood anywhere on the guitar, and no issues that affect the sound, structure, or playability.

Typically people just deal with the fact that a Kay from the 60’s might have higher action and be a little harder to play than a modern guitar. But that is NOT the case with this one. The neck is straight with proper relief, and the neck ANGLE is where it should be too. So it was able to be setup with action at the 12th fret measured at somewhere around 2.6mm bass side, and plays like a dream. It also has cleanly cut nut slots and a new compensated floating bridge for great intonation. It was setup with Ernie Ball 10s (as of Jan 13, 2021). Also worth mentioning- all the tuners work great, and the electronics were tested and work great as well. There is something with these single pickup hollowbodies that you really can’t get with other guitars. Super pure, musical and alive.

If you lookup sold listings, you’ll find these going between $300-$900 on Reverb. This one is in amazing playing condition, and I’m a little hesitant to let it go because of the sound, and the fact that they are appreciating in value. I could just be delusional, or trying to be a salesman, but there is truly something special about this one. It pulls awesome songs out of me. Therefore, for cash pickup sales I am asking $890, and to make the same amount after reverb's newly increased seller fees, I need to ask $965 on here.

The safest way to ship a guitar is to loosen the strings while packing. Since this guitar has a floating bridge, I will ask you upon purchase if you'd like me to mark the proper placement of the bridge with tape so that you get the best intonation when you tighten the strings back up. There is no case included, so I will be double boxing for shipping. Cheers!
