1966 Klira Caramba For Sale. I bought this broken plywood top guitar from a German music store through Reverb as a project guitar. The top was broken, there were splits in the side and a previous owner decided it would be louder with decently cut "F-holes", which cut through the cross bracing and tone bars, which did not make it louder. It did become very delicate, however. It was obviously dropped and suffered near irreparable damage.
I removed the top, made a new solid aged mahogany top, repaired the sides and crafted a new bridge for stringing through the top. It has a maple bridge plate.
The bracing is aged sitka spruce. The bridge is rosewood. The new nut and saddle are bone.
I removed the zero fret. I am in process of creating a new truss rod cover. The truss rod rattled in the neck so I injected some thinned contact cement which stops the rattles but does not prevent the rod from doing it's job.
I also re-fretted the neck with Dunlop .103w x .043h Nickel/Silver fret wire.
The original tuners were removed, serviced and re-installed.
The new finish is StewMac Red Mahogany lacquer and about 6 coats of clear. I did not fill the grain on the top.
The pick guard is custom made from B-W-B ABS as is the Truss Rod cover.
This guitar plays very nicely, sounds full with good projection and is kinda cool looking. The guitar will ship in a hard guitar case.
I will be uploading a video of me playing the guitar later this week.
