About This Listing

Up for sale, a 1960 Gibson Les Paul Junior in excellent condition and in perfect working order. The sound is everything you expect a great Junior to be, and the solid Honduran mahogany construction delivers an acoustic voice that is extremely authoritative and clear. While the guitar dates to early 1960, the neck profile carve is the quintessential '59 baseball bat shape with plenty of meat and roundness. Via the original dogear P-90 pickup, this Gibson truly delivers on the brand's golden era reputation with rich harmonic content, and a lively, midrange-forward growl. Lightweight at 7lbs 3oz, the instrument feels very substantial when you dig in hard, with a distinctive sparkling top end due in part to the aluminum wraparound tailpiece. For sweet P-90 single coil tone that can range from chiming cleans to roaring, all out raucousness through your favorite tube amp, this guitar has a versatility and tonal depth that belies its simple yet elegant appointments. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and currently strung with 10-46 strings, this guitar has low action and effortless playability.

The one-piece Honduran mahogany neck has a round, inviting baseball bat C-shaped profile carve, yielding gobs of sustain and a rich resonance central to this Junior’s lively, vital response, measuring .940" deep at the 1st fret and .995" at the 12th. The jet black and tight-grained Brazilian rosewood fretboard features the original medium jumbo frets, recently leveled and crowned and still retaining decent meat, showing no wear and fretting easily in every register. There is very light wear into the rosewood on the fretboard itself, primarily on the treble side of the board from frets 1-6, not impeding playability in the slightest. The scale length measures 24 3/4", and the original nylon nut measures 1 11/16" in width. On the headstock, the original Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines are intact with their original white buttons. The original serial number is still vibrant and clearly inked on the back of the headstock, along with the gold silkscreen Gibson logo and "Les Paul Junior" script text on the headstock's face.

The original dogear P-90 pickup features a clean bobbin and original windings, wired to a vintage (yet not original) CTS volume pot, while the original CentraLab tone pot is intact, dating back to the 41st week of 1958. The lightweight aluminum wraparound bridge is present, as are all of the original plastic parts including the transparent tortoise pickguard and black bonnet knobs.

There is a slender and extremely shallow split parallel with the long neck tenon, extending between the pickguard and pickup on the instrument’s face, and also to the bass side of the strap button extending a couple inches on the back. Structurally stable and purely cosmetic (and much more minor than your typical heel repair), some additional glue has also been injected around the parameter of the long neck tenon beneath the guard.

The gloss Cherry nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, bold and rich on the body, and slightly more muted from contact with the palm on the neck profile. There is requisite light pick scuffing across the tortoise guard, and wear is otherwise limited to some light scattered marks on the body as a whole, primarily behind the bridge and on the back, concentrated largely on the lower bout body edge. The neck profile exhibits a few shallow marks, mostly central to the carve behind frets 4-7 and not distracting to the palm while fretting in the slightest.

A black tolex chipboard case is included, ostensibly original and retaining Gibson's brass embossed badge on the case pocket.
