About This Listing

Wow! What a find!

It's a piece of history - the world's first commercially successful electric hollow-body guitar.

It became famous due in large part to its endorsement by notable guitar players including Charlie Christian. After Gibson introduced it in 1936, it immediately became popular in jazz orchestras, but unlike the usual acoustic guitars in jazz bands of the period, it was loud enough to take a more prominent position in ensembles.

Except for replaced tuners, this legendary ES-150 is all original and also in remarkably good condition.

When you see a pickup in this position you normally assume that the arched top is laminated and that the acoustic sound will be weak. But during this period, when adding pickups to full-sized acoustic archtops was relatively new, Gibson was still using a fully carved spruce top. As a result, the acoustic sound of this ES-150 is really good. The pickup has six adjustable pole pieces and sounds amazing when pugged into the amp.

The early Gibson pickup with metal housing has a great industrial look to it, with a gutsy tone, and check the cool knobs! Remarkably clean finish that shows only light lacquer checking and a great patina. There is one crack near the input jack area. Solid and pretty usual to these old ES models.

The neck is straight, strings action very comfortable, plays like a dream. This neck feels definitely more like a '50s Gibson, rather than a v-shaped, thicker '30s models.

The P-13 pickup is essentially an early, hand-made predecessor of P-90 manufactured until today, but the deco-looking nickel-plated steel cover and direct-to-top mounting gives it a more microphonic tonality to it compared to soapbars or regular dogear P-90s

No breaks or repairs, extremely well preserved.

Comes with the newer hardshell case.
