About This Listing

Early 2000's G&L Legacy modified H-S-S configuration with a rail humbucker in centre position (so technically now HHS) replacing the middle stock G&L single coil (and all pots replaced with CTS ones)
stock G&L alnico5 single coil in the neck
and a Dimarzio Tone Zone humbucker in the bridge which can be split to single coil mode with the mini toggle-switch

Body is a beautifully grained heavy ash - this is not a lightweight strat, it is on the heavier side but it has a particularly unique tone that you just can't achieve with a lightweight swamp ash or alder - think of Eddie Van Halen's first Frankenstrat - black and white then later painted additional red over b&w - which was said to be heavy northern ash

  • Neck is maple with a real Rosewood fingerboard with a nice rounded shaped neck which I think is described as a standard C-shape - no skinny necks here
  • 12" fingerboard with medium jumbo frets - easy to get around and great for someone used to a flatter Gibson radius - frets still in great shape despite this being almost twenty year vintage instrument - no heavily gigged barroom beer, sweat or smoke damage, just home use
  • Bridge saddles are machined or solid brass on a solid steel base plate with a brass block anchoring the strings (painted black)
Included in the G&L hardshell case are the heavy-duty trem arm and the original certificate of authenticity

Master volume control has been changed from a 250k to a 500k CTS pot to benefit the humbuckers
other pots replaced too -  first CTS tone control wired only for the neck G&L single coil pickup (which sounds best rolled down 3-quarters to compensate for the brighter 500k volume pot and mix better with the darker sounding humbuckers) along with second CTS tone control for the middle rail pickup and the bridge humbucker

Lots of tonal options available here
Mini toggle switch is wired to the Dimarzio TZ to split to single coil for a cleaner or more 'stratty' tone, and better 'quack' in the second position of the 5-way selector switch
a truly unique hand made American Classic guitar not just another production line instrument

Please note - do not confuse these earlier made G&L's with the ones currently being produced with different specs -
especially the cheaper ones that are under a grand in UK or EU and often have a solid finish headstock
Later in the 2000's G&L came out with an inferior product that cut corners especially on the bridge - at the time I read that they had the same 'far-east' cast pot metal bridges that came on the tribute models
instead of the solid steel and brass saddles of the USA ones.
Unless it states that the bridge saddles are machined or solid brass on a solid steel plate with a brass block anchoring the strings (& painted black) - it probably is the cheaper pot metal version

The under a grand legacy's also have a gigbag instead of hardshell case and a Carribean 'rosewood' which is not the same as actual Rosewood used on older models. Don't confuse those with the older ones, they are not the same.

This one listed is from the better vintage years of G&L USA in my opinion. I think collectors and G&L aficianados would agree

Please contact before ordering if location is not Mainland UK or Mainland Europe-EU, or possibly a location that incurs a higher courier price. Thanks.
