- New build Perfect-Balance PB-Bass
(This is essentially a p-bass with the neck moved into the body to bring the part of the neck you probably use most more in front of you, not so much at an arm's length out to one side, and the neck is not heavy on your fretting hand... this is additionally enhanced by my slimmed down head style and the tuners are lightened both in style and in progressively getting slimmed down and lighter from low E to the G.
I have also extended the upper strat button to move the c of g and bring the bass across your body... every little helps in getting a guitar to hang right. The bridge is moved to the rear by the same amount as the neck, so the resonant scale is still standard long scale 34 inches... and that also helps move the c of g... as I say, every little helps.
The neck is a bit more than an inch further into the body but it is surprising how much that changes the feel in moving the fretboard across you; and further to that on this bass I have made a strap button extension on the upper horn to bring the bass even further across you. You lose the awkward feel of your hand straining to twist as you finger low F and Bb and other low notes in the lower frets.
As the highest notes are further into the body I carved a small easy access recess for your hand.
The wood appears to be Paulownia... super light and a lovely grain.
In my set up today I reduced the string clearances across the first fret from around 2mm to .5mm (half a mill). and I went back and forth on the truss rod adjustment to get a nice amount of neck relief. My first glance at the bridge saddle alignment said I was going to find a big intonation issue, turned out not as bad as I thought; but even so, a few twiddles back and forth has got it singing more sweetly... at least to my ear!
Another thing I found in the set up is that there is less space between the fat strings across the nut than between the thin strings, but as the fret clearances were as I mention above too high, I both lowered them and moved them sideways at the same time... now the spaces are all even.
So check out the work in the photos that I have done, and if you are a left handed bassman on a normal wage, this will offer you something a bit special and unique without going up to scary luthier prices... and probably play and sound better as well! Thanks, Mark D Phillips....... (PCsGC)
