RockScience Custom Shop Upgraded and Modified MXL990
This upgrade is more than just changing a few capacitors. This 990 has been totally gutted and rebuilt using a premium Large Diaphragm k47 Style Capsule and mounting system and our own Schoeps style transformerless circuit. The headbasket has been replaced with a higher quality and more attractive one from mic-parts.com. It looks and sounds gorgeous!
So... What does it sound like?
Please check out the video link in the photo gallery. Everything you hear in that video was captured with our custom shop mics (including this exact mic). At one point, there are nineteen tracks of my mics sounding at once. There is no EQ on any individual track or the final mix. If you visit our youtube channel, there is also a short before/after video which demonstrates the improvement of a stock MXL compared to the upgraded one.
Our circuit uses ultra low-noise resistors and high quality WIMA Polypropylene Capacitors in the audio path. The PCB is manufactured in the USA and assembled in my shop with care. The mic is tested, burned in and working perfectly. I've even included the optional internal Omni/Cardioid Pattern switch in this build! Our circuit works perfectly over a wide range of phantom power voltages and is voiced perfectly to match the k47 capsule.
This mic includes the basic "hard" mount (no shockmount). No case or zipper pouch is included.
