About This Listing

Welcome to another fine guitar from The Old Europe! Please make sure to read the entire description below carefully, and look at all the pictures.

General introduction and background:

Very old Klira guitar. Besides Hofner and Framus, Klira was the biggest manufacturer of guitars in that first golden era of German guitar building. The guitar is labelled "Triumphator", which was the label for musical instruments of German mall chain Quelle (long out of business). Klira was the main provider of guitars at the time, but Quelle also had guitars built by other makers. The guitar is completely hollow, but the f-holes are fake - they are only painted to the top.

Measurements, weight and other specs:

-     Scale: 628 mm

-     Nut: ~41,5 mm

-     Weight: 2,98 kg

-     Pickups: two amazingly twangy mini-humbuckers, controlled like on an ES style with a toggle switch and 2x vol, 2 tone potis. The electronics are accessible via a plate on the back of the guitar.

-     Body: laminated spruce, completely hollow (no center block). The f-holes are fake (painted only), as well as the binding (just painted stripes). The backplate allows access to the electronics, but is not original. Don't worry about the missing screw in the picture, I already noticed and it's now there ;-)

-     Neck: Bolt-on, likely maple neck with rosewood fingerboard

-     Body: Good condition. The original colour has become hazey and has discolouring-issues in some places (please check the pictures). It has been cleaned and buffed as good as possible with my means.

-     Neck: slim, straight neck with nicely working trussrod (requires a 7 gauge ring key to operate). Low vintage frets. The lacquer between the neck and the fretboard has crackled a bit, but there is no gap or anything. It's normal for these very thin coats of lacquer they used on these cheap guitar to crackle.

-     Electronics: fully functional, slightly microphonic on the bridge pickup.

-     Hardware: fully functional, little traces of corrosion and age-haze; the pickguard has been broken and repaired, but it is wobbly anyway and I would recommed to take it off and store it away safely.

-     Originality: All original except for the bridge, which is a modern replacement yet is a copy of the widely used Schaller bridge of the time (used on Höfner as well). The bridge has been fine-adjusted to match the guitar. The backplate is NOT original.

Sound and Playability:

-     Playability and string action: The guitar plays ok-ish with a string action of 2,3 mm at the 12th fret. The bridge is maxed out and the neck already shimmed - to get the action even lower, more shims would have to be added or an even lower bridge to be found. Due to the low angle of the strings coming from the tremolo to the bridge, the bridge as a moveable part may move about when you hammer very hard chords or bend the strings Gimour-style.

 - Intonation: the bridge allows an almost 100% clean intonation of each string, and intonation is great.

-     Sound: a very warm yet twangy sound from the pickups - please watch the video.
