Hello and welcome to the House of Chrome.

You are looking at a rare Astatic WR-40 quad crystal microphone from the late 1950's to mid 1950's. It comes with practical screw on F-11 adapter / cable, catalog and original box shown. This mic is an absolute gem and the nicest I have ever come across. It's literally a museum quality piece.

Pic # 2 is from an old catalog I have showing the mics characteristics. The WR-40 was based on the WR-20 model. Both models looked identical but the difference being that the WR-40 was more expensive. Why more expensive? The WR-40 had 4 crystal elements inside instead of two boosting the WR-40's output / signal strength. It was a bit more expensive so most people chose the less expensive WR-20. You tend to see far fewer WR-40 models around and this one is extremely nice.

Pic # 3 & 4 is of the actual Astatic data sheet you'll be receiving that shows several models of that era and a really rare piece of literature. I've never seen another in all of my years.

This microphone has been tested and sadly the crystal elements no longer work but one could always upgrade the mic with a new crystal element. A dynamic element would work as well as a ribbon contraption. plenty of room inside the housing to work with. Until that happens...this will make a fantastic display or prop piece.

As you can see the cosmetics are gorgeous with virtually no wear. The black cloth screens are perfect with zero holes or rips. No fading and the color is dark and even. The Astatic badge looks very good and is completely legible. The clutch mechanism has plenty of resistance and you can tilt the mic forward and backward at will without any slippage.

The W4-20 comes with it's original Astatic F-11 adapter which you will need if you plan on mounting this mic to an American microphone stand. The adapter has a short 10 foot cable with an older Switchcraft male 1/4 inch end connector. If you ever decide to upgrade the element you'll be glad to have this adapter as it works perfectly.

The original WR-20 box is included. It shows heavier wear but a very rare accessory to have and a good place to store the mic while not in use.

This mic will really stand out in the vintage mic collection. Display it proudly anywhere in the home, office or studio.

MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS NOT PART OF THIS SALE...USED FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY.

If you need a floor stand or desk stand for this mic please just ask and I'll show you what I have available.
