Rare vintage Sansui Model 250 tube stereo receiver with NEW Nichicon & Panasonic signal path capacitors.
These are notorious for the original Suzuki paper-in-oil capacitors going bad, and the original electrolytics are of poor quality as well. The hard work has been done on this unit and it's probably the only one you're ever going to find out in the wild with all the signal path capacitors replaced/upgraded with high quality Nichicon and Panasonic components.
I replaced every single Suzuki PIO capacitor with either Panasonic film or Nichicon electrolytics (depending on which value I needed). This was a monumental and incredibly time consuming task, as these Model 250s are point-to-point wired and are basically a giant rat's nest. The utmost care was taken to ensure good clean connections, and any original connections that looked questionable were touched up.
The original multi-section power supply filter can capacitor was not replaced as I could not find a modern equivalent. It is working, but at some point I recommend replacing it as a matter of preventative maintenance.
The tubes are all original and all are working well, including the original green "seeing eye" tube on the front panel. Looks really cool!
The original incandescent bulbs were replaced with soft white LEDs to retain original appearance and keep the operating temps cooler. They look great and really make this thing look sharp.
The outer cover is pretty beat up and shows a lot of wear, but luckily it is solid metal and could easily be sanded down and repainted. I decided to leave that up to the buyer in case he or she decides they want to do a simulated woodgrain wrap or a custom color of their own choice. The front faceplate font is worn in a few places as well. Cosmetically this unit is about a 6/10. If the outer cover were to be restored, it would look really sharp. But it's time for me to move on from this project, I had my fun with it.
All potentiometers and switches were cleaned and lubricated, and the tube sockets were all cleaned to ensure good connections (this alone killed a lot of extra background noise). Entire unit was disassembled for cleaning inside and out.
Tested and working well. The AM tuner had a hard time pulling a clean signal when I tested it, but FM was fine. The other source inputs work well. This unit is going to have a bit more background hum/noise than solid state equipment, it's just the nature of these tube designs and not a product defect. If you want dead quiet operation, don't buy 60 year old tube Sansui's. And a new filter cap would probably make it quieter as well.
This unit works and is ready for its new home. It's beat up cosmetically, but this is the only Sansui 250 you're going to find with this much work done to it. Don't miss out.
