Yamaha SJ 550 HM in black cherry made in Japan in 1985.
Twin humbucker telecaster style guitar with coil taps via push / push tone control.
I've owned this guitar from new. It is all original except for the addition of a Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro II in the bridge and Schaller strap lock buttons. I'll include the original Yamaha Spinex pickup (minus cover) in the sale.
The guitar plays beautifully. Frets are in good condition and there's no buzzing.
The made in Japan legend is stamped together with the serial number into the lacquer on the back of the headstock.
Condition is consistent with being gigged and played regularly over 35 years. There are dings and scrapes here and there which I've tried to photograph.
Notable are
a chip on the lower front edge close to the tone control and a slight bend to the jack plate where it once fell off its strap.
Pick swirl below below the neck pickup and wear to the neck pickup cover.
There are a couple of really minor dings on the back of the neck.
The plastic pickup selector switch tip is missing.
The volume control spindle is slightly askew. This is really marginal and the pot works perfectly.
Some of the hardware, notably the bridge and jack plate have faded from the original black to gunmetal grey.
Unusually this guitar has black Yamaha tuners. Every other one I've seen has chrome tuners.
Comes with a quality gig bag as standard or alternatively a Hiscox Strat / Tele case for an extra £50.
Details on Yamaha SJ or Super Jam can be a little hard to come by. Bill Alston's comprehensive history is worth reading.
