The ThunderTron has a unique piano-like clarity, with low end that is detailed and dynamic, without being too boomy. Credit for the La Cabronita's clear, round tone is partially due to Fender's Greasebucket tone control circuit, which lets you shape your sound to perfection. The Greasebucket circuit's special trick is that it rolls of high frequencies while avoiding the resonant peak found in other tone circuits. The result? Big fat low end that's as bright or dark as you like, without ever getting muddy or indistinct.
The quartersawn maple neck has what Fender's factory description states is a "50s U neck profile," but in truth what we have here is a classic Jazz Bass profile with a bit more depth that fills the palm nicely. The worn in, rounded fretboard edges and ideal C profile depth make this a bass that feels intuitive and familiar, with vintage style fretwire that shows virtually no wear with near perfect crowns. The back of the neck has a smooth nitro gloss finish that's worn down just enough to play effortlessly, while still having the feel of a finished neck. The headstock has a bit of modern Fender flair, with the "F" stamped tuning machines that turn very smoothly with a modern more exacting gear ratio than a vintage style tuner. The 1 1/2" Micarta nut is the ideal height and hand shaped as well.
On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, and the classic presentation of this bass includes 50s style knurled metal knobs, a High Mass Fender bridge and tasteful one-ply creme pickguard with rounded edges. The bass is extremely resonant, balances well on a strap and weighs only 8lbs 8oz. Cosmetically, the bass ostensibly shows no wear outside the factory relic job, as it has spent the last few years in its case. The "La Cabronita Porrazo" decal on the back of the instrument just south of the string ferrules is mint and completely intact.
This is an extremely rare instrument, limited to only 30 units worldwide and one of Fender's most delightful Custom Shop creations to date!
