Videos available for serious inquires. This is a cleaned and revised working machine in great condition. Only the (left) tension roller needs a bit of running before it stabilizes when the deck has been idle and unused for a while. Albeit a thoughtfully designed and constructed clean example, this listing offers a vintage deck so be aware of proactive maintenance and further adjustments as required, as we can't provide further warranties.

• SP8 Stellavox Professional Portable audio recorder description:

Studio quality professional portable reel-to-reel magnetic tape recorder deck manufactured in Switzerland and designed by Mr Georges Quellet. Built extremely rugged in full silver aluminum and made with the finest quality, the Stellavox SP-8 is, like a unique swiss clock, the advanced refinement to their counterparts.

The Stellavox machines are lovely examples of Swiss standards of fit, finish and engineering. Compact and technically 'beautiful', this 'kinetic art' lightweight recording tool machine of the highest quality could do almost as much as its large reel to reel tape recorder competitors with its impressive technical data:

• Flat Frequency response (± 2 dB between 30 Hz and 16 kHz)
• Signal to Noise Ratio: 70dB (Mono version)
• Preadjusted interchangeable block heads
• Mono/stereo switch
• All the electronics are modular and pluggable
• Inputs: Mic x 2, Fixed Line (Mixer) x2, Variable Line x2 (balanced 200-600 Ohm)
• Switchable Microphone Powering: D Dynamic or Ribbon, T Parallel-fed (AB) 12v condensers, P Phantom-fed 12v (and optional 48v)
• Microphone attenuators (x 2) & two position Low Frequency Microphone Filter
• Built in reference Amp/speaker and Test Tone
• Monitoring Phones amp with level control
• Selectable standard speeds: IPS 3.75 (9.5cm/s), 7.5 (19cm/s), 15 (38cm/s) extremely well controlled by an electronic servo system.
• Various synchro options and capabilities

Awarded engineer, prolific user of Stellavox machines and recording purist Kostas Metaxas [who's famous quote about some of his successful works is: "Two microphones, straight into the Stellavox - That's it"] comments:
"When I purchased my Stellavox SM8 and TD9 in 1986, they cost ~ $50K - the price of a suburban house in Melbourne, Australia. The same house today is ~ $1million. "
