About This Listing

Ask anyone who has a Martin was the slogan for Martin Saxophones for decades and they were not wrong. Martin has a long, storied tradition of handcrafting instruments in Elkhart, ID. Coming in a variety of styles, set ups and configurations, Martin had a horn for every player. The Handcraft Standard can be viewed as analogous to the King Zephyr, as it features many of the same construction details as the top of the line horns, but lack a few bells and whistles. In this case, the Martin Handcraft Standard seem to be a combination of a Handcraft Imperial body (note the Eb vent key, below the low D key) and Handcraft Committee keywork. It is notable that the Handcraft standard did not have fixed right thumbrest or heart-shaped left thumbrest, which were common features in the Committee and Committee 2 saxophones.

Enough of the history lesson - what's most important is the fact this horn has a sound that could knock down a house. It was mechanically overhauled by our in-house tech, so the pads are fresh as new snow, the response is better than it's been in decades and the action is like butter. It features the original silver plating which is in terrific shape. This is the sound of American horns and you would be hard-pressed to find a better representation of that tone.
